(a) sketch a line diagram showing the layout and components of a hydraulic system with a variable delivery, pressure compensated pump and accumulator, suitable for the operation of deck machinery(5)
(b) discuss the advantages of using electrically driven machinery over hydraulically driven winches and windlasses. (5)

Synopsis
>> System shown here has a centralised hydraulic power pack unit where all hydraulic deck machineries such as mooring winches, anchor windlass, cranes, Anchor brake etc are supplied from.
>> 5 marks are given just for the drawing please spend some time and draw a neat diagram.
Marker's Feedback
21-Dec: Most candidates did well with this question, some never bothered with the sketch but still got marks for part (b).
18-Dec: No real problems here.
17-Oct: The standard of the sketches was good but the answers for part (b) left a bit to be desired not a lot of candidates then energy requirements.
