Write a report for the engineering superintendent regarding the replacement of the fuel injectors of three main engine units due to severe erosion of the nozzle holes and burning of the injector tips. The report must explain how the defects were detected, the likely cause of the damage and the action which has been instituted to prevent further incidents of this type. (16)

2021/MAR >> Reasonably well answered but very few candidates mentioned temperature as being an important factor. See comments above about reports If the candidate is asked for a report (question 4) the answer should be in the form of a report, not a letter or an essay. Candidates must have undergone qualifying sea-time before sitting the examination and so should have encountered reports on board ship.). Many candidates indicated that failed nozzles were due to “3rd party spares” which effectively puts the blame on someone else. A Chief Engineer joining a ship should make himself/herself aware of all spares on board soon after joining. If defective spares are such a common fact engineers should try to ascertain if their ship actually has any.
