Question
Q8. A screwed steel rod has 5 threads per centimetre and an effective cross-sectional area of 1000 mm2 It is placed inside a bronze tube 280 mm long, 52 mm external diameter that is 4 mm thick. Nuts at each end of the screwed rod are made finger tight against the tube. ONE nut is then tightened up an additional quarter of a turn.
Calculate EACH of the following:
(a) the stress in the bronze tube. (12)
(b) the strain energy stored in the screwed steel rod. (4)
Note: Modulus of Elasticity for steel= 200 GN/m2
Modulus of Elasticity for bronze= 120 GN/m2
