Question

Q1. Describe, with the aid of a graph, EACH of the following types of ferrous material failure, stating ONE practical example of EACH:

1. creep; (5)

2. fatigue. (5)

Asked in Year/Month/Ques No.
Synopsis

Creep is function of time, DO NOT draw stress-strain graph here which is to be used for to indicate key properties of the material including its elastic region, plastic region, yield point, and ultimate tensile strength. The graph to be used here is strain Vs time!

Marker's Feedback

2021/DEC  Varying answers here, most did well but others drew stress/strain curves or unannotated squiggles. Very few candidates mentioned elevated temperature being a factor in creep failures.

2017/DEC Part (a) well attempted but marks lost for not giving an example. Part (b) asked for a graph but most gave the sketch of the beach marks that are a sign of fatigue failure again not giving an example lost marks.
